Black as Night, Sweet as Sin

coffee

Ever wondered why all thoughtful and intelligent conversations happen over a cup of coffee and not any other beverage?

India, traditionally is (or rather was!!) a tea drinking country but thanks to the economic boom for bestowing hectic work hours, coffee is now catching up fast as a  preferred drink mostly among youth and white collar workers. I was at Starbucks today and watching those young people swarming the place, it struck me that it’s kind of bizarre or at least a trend to note that how coffee can become an excuse for a casual meeting.  Some often used expressions these days are ‘let’s catch up over a cup of coffee‘ or ‘You owe me a cup of coffee’ or ‘oh! why don’t we meet at some coffee place‘.  Even when I’m meeting a guy, I’m expecting a quite obvious and weary line to seek attention ‘Just one cup of coffee is what I’m asking for‘.  Like ‘Coffee’ has a solution for everything.  And tea still elite is losing its sheen at least among young people.  But these days you would rarely come across somebody who would say ‘Hey let’s meet up for high tea‘. I haven’t heard this in long time now.

Coffee undoubtedly is a magical drink as it lights up your brain and suddenly the most buffoon person will also sound like Einstein. How many of us could not imagine kicking the mornings without a coffee? When my friends and I meet up for a coffee, the conversations we exchange are definitely more constructive and intense. And some memorable moments for sure. Seems there is certainly something special in those dark cocoa beans which get along well with people in any mood.  And that’s why Neil Gaiman rightly said “Black as night, sweet as sin” as it’s too complex to understand the very nature of coffee so just enjoy your cup of Kaffe.

Faux Pas in movie theaters

Have you ever been a victim of people’s lack of knowledge of etiquettes in a cinema hall while you are watching an entertaining flick (which is quite rare these days!!). I went for a movie today and hell, the presence of certain disturbing elements there was absolutely intolerable and since we belong to civilized society we can’t do anything much about it. Some common faux pas committed by people that should be looked upon to avoid glaring eyes and unwanted attention.

Crying or shouting kids: Call me sadist but kids below 10 should be banned from the movie theaters. Nothing is more irritating than a wailing child, I once shouted really bad at a child (only he was too far to hear it).

Ringing of or Speaking on phone: I understand that some people watching the movie could be some busy hotshots but least they can do is to put their phone on SILENT mode. Ringing of cellular phones with cacophonous ringtones is very disturbing. And more annoying is the part when the person who owns it actually picks the call and talks loud !!

Taking advantage of darkness: Thinking that it is dark and nobody can see you is a big misconception, We can definitely hear your oohs and ahas. I am sure you are totally in love but I haven’t paid to witness your public display of affection, get yourself a room !!!

Throwing the dialogues: Yes I have seen that. And it is so cheap when some people actually shout the dialogue before the actor even starts. Just because you have seen the movie twice or thrice doesn’t make you Leonardo Di Caprio.  So shut up and let me hear him.

Arriving late: Just because it’s an entertainment activity doesn’t mean you don’t have to be on time. Imagine you totally engrossed in the movie and suddenly somebody disturbs you in between asking you to give them the way to take their seat.  But it doesn’t end there they’ll come back again saying excuse me because they came to the wrong row. And worse is when they step on your toe.!! Once a lady with heels stepped on my foot and I was left cursing her for rest of the movie.

Throwing Popcorns: It was fun when I was 8 year old but now if I get popcorns from back while I’m holding up my emotions is very very pesky. Eat your corns, do not waste them as you have paid for it. And I for the movie.

Stretching your legs: I once went for a horror flick and I was very much into it like shit scary and suddenly I saw a disfigured hairy foot on the arm of my seat. I screamed. Plus it was stinky. I hit the foot twice to make the person realize of contempt. There is nothing bad in stretching your limbs but atleast don’t do it on somebody.

There are other trivial elements which people either deliberately or unknowingly do which cause disruptions in cinema hall.   But I think people should learn about etiquettes in different social settings to avoid any discomfort for others.

Just five minutes of goodness

It’s always so good to see people helping people. Today I witnessed something like that when a man in his 30s stood by the side of a handicapped old man in a mayhem crowd. The man was going to work but still managed to spare 5 minutes to help that old man cross the street.

Just 5 minutes of charity everyday leaves you with a complacent feeling in mind. On that thought I would like to share a very inspiring video which was shared to me by a friend. I hope you like it.

Only if we have 5 minutes to spare.!!

Forgotten Gratitudes…

Life is running out too fast. We sometime take our people for granted and forget to convey them their importance in our lives. May be to an extent that their absence might affect our presence. Some oblivious pointers of life that are needed to be recalled:

  • Show your Mom how much you love and care for her. That her food is the best meal you had in a day. That you are proud of her for all the pain she takes to keep the family integrated.
  • Tell your Dad that you are thankful to him to provide you all the things you demanded in life. That you look up to him for all the hardwork he has done so that you would never face financial crunch.
  • Say your brother or sister that no matter what you will always stand by them. That you fight with them because you adore them. That they are your saviour at times.
  • Sit by your dog, cuddle him and run your fingers through his coat. Thank him for being a mute listener for all your jibber-jabber. And that he is the best dog you ever had.
  • Meet friends. Not like body meeting body but soul meeting soul. Salute them for being asses in your life. Thank them for all the laughter they have provided when you needed it most. Be grateful to them for taking you out from abyss like infinite times.
  • Finally thank God for being so kind on you, to grant you a life which is beautiful. And you wouldn’t have wished for anything better.

Enrich your life with these Oscar winners. As you don’t want to live with a qualm of not being grateful to people who are the reason for your existence.

Say It…for youself

Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are even incapable of forming such opinions.” – Albert Einstein

To be opinionated or not to be that is the question. I have always observed that having opinions on everything and having none at all both are not taken in a very good light. It gets annoying sometimes with opinionated people but that’s genuine as there can’t be two lions living peacefully in a territory, they ought to fight to survive. They may not agree with each other’s opinions but are conscious enough of each other’s presence. On the other hand, I feel sorry for those who lack any thought or idea of their own. They are like shadows following voiced souls. There may be a variety that holds opinion but are meek to express them as they think their expression might be rejected or remain unheard. But what is wrong with the rejection, even president’s policies are sometimes rejected by people? You got to try over and over again and soon you will get used to of rejection. Sometimes I think, these non-opinionated people are dangerous for a democracy, as they wouldn’t even know whom to vote in elections. But it is equally true that these non-opinionated people are angels, as you know they will never disagree with you so you will always get their nods. Hmmm, does not sound fun. May be they opt to be mutes most of the times so that they can be in good books of others. Well, there are enough good people on this planet, I still like to be counted as a headstrong.

It is not my business but I still would like to give an advice to such people. Stop being good if you are trying to. Look around and think. You will soon get some thought on India’s deteriorating politics, global recession or civil wars in Gulf. Say it, even if it doesn’t make sense or is insensitive statement. But you have to say it, otherwise you will be soon termed as DUMB both literally and figuratively.

Swingy Days. Swingy Moods.

Human Brain is the most complex yet simple (if understood) thing, the Almighty has created. Neither am I a psychology student nor holds any inquisitiveness to study human brain. However, it is interesting to see the variations in human behavior on good and bad days. And very bad days.

I can be categorized as someone who shows extreme moods. Nothing I boast of. On any good day, I am seen laughing and making others laugh with my one-liners. While on a bad day, the same me can’t resist snapping at people on trivial things, even at my best people. That’s me.

This post is not about self-correction or to list down measures for mood-balancing. In my opinion, there is nothing wrong in showing extreme moods (in civil limits). I am just doing what I am programmed to do, being human. Even animals have moods, I am no different. What we need is not shunning the expression of our moods but acceptance of it by others. Sincerely, I respect moods. I believe every being has a right to be themselves. Why to wary of people judging us. But, for people to respect your mood, it is first important to be true to yourself. A honest mood swing is not only acceptable but understandable. Bad mood mixed with the traces of ego or personal malice is straight away ousted. The latter can not cover up for a rough mood.  Somehow, egoism demeans the whole concept of mood swings.

Not that I am justifying my extremity of moods. I do sometimes rue about my frostiness and try to undone the done. But, people who know me, would agree with me. Anything that is not manipulative is forgettable and neglect able. It is human ritual. On-set of genuine expression and humble acceptance of checkered moods, I believe would simplify or define the intricacies of the human brain.
